BDSM is an acronym indicating several sexual relational practices or preferences based on domination or submission: Bondage, Discipline, Sadism and masochism. Such practices may be very problematic if they don’t follow the rule “safe, sane and consensual”.

The term today relates to a complex world with a number of figures, practices and aspects (slaves, subs, dom, mistress, masters pro domme).

The phenomenon in Italy started about 30 years ago. In the ’80s Italy saw an impressive boom of the porno industry (which also included images and other SM-related materials) and people with SM related fantasies were just woyerists of pictures coming from Scandinavia, Denmark and US. In that period some people start to set up postal contacts writing letters to a comic book “Isabella”.

In the same period the important magazine “I moderni” was published and it was an embrional club.

However, this culture was still very late in italy, compared to countries such as French and england, where some people tried to set up some contacts.

After the ’80s interest is increasing, but still involves just a limited number of men, so practices stay still fantasies. Such people were still officially considered dangerous perverts.

After a number of years culture and consciousness are increasing and some woman enter the scene. People slowly start to make it real and explore. Some feminine figure slowly become famous and enter the center of the scene. Many contacts are now established by couples in search of other couples or singles.

The philosophy of the movement created in the period 1980-95.

The fetish style is already existing, but with a very minor role and not considered by the media.

In the early ’90s the first professional dominations appear on the scene and publish advertisements of payment services (but in a very small number until the end of the ’90s).

Since 1995 there are sporadic attempts to organize SM parties, but the first attempts result in a flop or quite, being that people are used to practices SM, but just inside their houses, not with other people watching and participating.

In this way the decade 1995-2005 sees the growing of different experiences: SM-related dinners, associations and occasional meetings.

In 1998 the firs periodical appointment established in Milano, a party taking place tha last monday of each month. A growing number of women is involved, but still with a bigger male most.

Thanks to Internet, important relations established with American and German associations. And all this brings to the import of new practices: ballbusting, multitrampling, male chastity belts, crushing, pony girl or pony boy, new bondage and spanking techniques. In this period important internet sites and associations are created, but the movement starts to be divided in competing groups. In the same time, other appointments and events are created outside Milano, slowly in Brescia and Rome. Meanwhile the number of professional dominates has increased (mainly because it has become a profitable business) and the media include more and more fetish and SM elements. However, officially the puritan Italian society sees this with suspect (or sarcasm).

After 2005 thanks to Internet, there is a major diffusion of quite unknown practices, such as the brain fucking, the CFNM, water torture, cuckolding and new bondage techniques.
Other practices such as the “breath control” (1000 deaths every year) and those called “Rack” (risk aware) included, but refused by most people.
